Hazardous Waste

HIM/NRB tenants may request a hazardous waste pick-up or a delivery of hazardous waste supplies using one of the following two options:

To ensure your hazardous waste container is picked up in a timely manner, please call or enter a request before noon on Wednesdays and Fridays since we collect hazardous waste containers on Mondays and Thursdays.

Equipment Disposal

If you are disposing of equipment containing Freon, please contact HIM/NRB EH&S Office at 617-432-2762 to scan the equipment for hazardous chemicals and biological materials.  Once approved by the HIM/NRB EH&S Office for disposal, then contact the Facility Management Company at 617-432-1901 to have the Freon removed from the equipment before disposal.

Biological Waste

Biohazardous waste in the HIM/NRB building is managed by the Facility Operations Center and Harvard Custodial Department.  Please call the Facility Operations Center with any questions about packaging or removal, 617-432-1901.  NOTE: Biohazard waste boxes, red bags, and sharp containers can be obtained by calling the Facility Operations Center at 617-432-1901.

Liquid Biohazard Waste – Blood and blood products

  • Render non-infectious then dispose of through the sanitary sewer. 

  • Ensure pH is in between 5.5 and 12.0 before disposing down the sink drain.

Solid Biohazard Waste – Animal carcasses, biohazard agents

  • Render recombinant DNA non-infectious using a validated method (autoclave) and dispose of it in a biohazard waste box.

  • Label the biohazard waste boxes “Animal Carcasses” in the Custom Label Box and check off “Incineration Only” box on the side of the biohazard waste box.

  • For human waste, check the “Pathological” and “Incineration Only” boxes on the side of the biohazard waste box.

Sharps - Discarded articles that may cause puncture wounds or cuts, including but not limited to hypodermic needles and syringes, broken medical glassware, scalpel blades, disposable razors, suture needles, and Pasteur pipettes.

  • Discard medical articles into a sharps container.

  • Never fill a sharps container over ¾ full.

  • Once full, close the container.

  • A Stericycle representative will remove the full sharps container and replace it with an empty one.

  • Contact the HIM/NRB EH&S Office if you need to dispose of an old sharps container.

Biological Waste Boxes

  • Put the box together correctly to ensure that the bottom does not fall out.

  • Make sure the box has TWO red bags!

  • Do not fill over ¾ full.

  • Do not fill over 55 pounds.

  • Ensure no visible signs of leaking or blood on the outer surface.

  • Seal each bag individually

  • Place 2” wide tape over the top of the box to seal

  • Put name of PI, date, building, and room # on the box

  • Close when not in use (for example: at end of day)

The HIM/NRB EH&S office provides the following services:
  • Management of the hazardous chemical waste program
  • Management of the Biosafety program
  • Emergency response for chemical spills/incidents and air quality issues
  • Laboratory safety inspections
  • Inspections of facility safety equipment including eyewashes, emergency showers, chemical spill kits, biosafety cabinets and chemical fume hoods.
  • Information resource for health, safety, and environmental regulatory compliance questions.
  • Oversees compliance with the MWRA Wastewater discharge permit
  • Industrial Hygiene services
  • Chairs the HIM/NRB Safety Committee
  • Develops and updates the Environmental Health & Safety Manual policies and Chemical Hygiene Plan
